Teacher Interview

What I learned from interviewing two Early Childhood teachers is that they are concerned with children not getting much time to play anymore. They feel that children having the time to play is very important because it builds on their social/emotional, cognitive, and language skills. They feel with all the state mandated standards that they have to follow it pushes them to make the children work harder therefore not allowing as much time to play. They have to ensure that each child is meeting the benchmarks that they are required to meet.

  1. I agree play time is very important. It definitly builds a childs social/emotional, cognitive and language skills. I think that dramatic play is also very important for children. I think that at a young age children should not be pushed on benchmarks and should be able to play freely.

  2. Michelle,

I agree with you I think that children need that play time during the day in order to build the social skills for learning. Being able to play with other children helps them build problem solving skills, language skills and so much more. I work with five and six year olds at my center and I see how important it is for them to all be friends. The fact is that children can only work so hard before they get tired and start to not like school, which is what we do not want to happen at such a young age. I already have second graders in my center saying they hate school and never want to go back because its hard or because they do not get to see their friends enough.
